The Parliamentary Select Committee, appointed to make suitable recommendations for the expansion of higher education opportunities in Sri Lank, was of the view that when granting UGC approval for affiliated universities and courses, strict measures should be taken to ensure that it is not misused for various marketing purposes.

This was discussed at the Select Committee of Parliament to make suitable recommendations for the expansion of higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka which met recently in Parliament, Chaired by Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

The Select Committee met with professionals and associations in order to discuss the way forward for the expansion of the higher education sector. Dr. Mohan Lal Grero, former MP, Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, Ceylon- German Technical Training Institute, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, G. T. Bandara, Chairman of Royal Institute, and M.M.M. Mustapha, former MP, took part as representatives of professionals and industry associations.

Furthermore, representatives of the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education, (SLIATE) student union were also called before the Committee to express their views.

The Committee also was of the view that a proper mechanism should be in place to make use of the time gap between receiving Advance Level Results and entering University. Moreover, regulating various degree awarding bodies to ensure quality of higher education was also looked into at the PSC meeting.
