More than 200,000 Lankans have left for overseas employment so far this year



Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara, told journalists yesterday that 200,026 Sri Lankans had left for foreign employment by 04 September this year after registering with Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE),

Nanayakkara said that about 311,000 Sri Lankans had left for foreign employment in 2022. The Minister said he expected a similar number of people to leave the country this year as well. Sri Lankan workers had remitted over 2.8 billion U.S. dollars in the first half of 2023, he said.

In 2021, Sri Lankan workers sent 5.49 billion dollars and only remitted around 3.8 billion dollars in 2022, according to official data.
