Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced in Parliament yesterday that the Supreme Court had determined that the new Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill was consistent with the Constitution and could be passed in Parliament by a simple majority.

The Bill was challenged in the Supreme Court in terms of article 121(1) of the constitution.

Speaker Abeywardena said that the Court had held that neither the Bill nor any of its provisions was inconsistent with Article 12 or any other provisions in the Constitution.
