Tonnes of vegetables discarded
By Pradeep Prasanna Samarakoon
Three tonnes of vegetables had been thrown away by the traders of the Manning Market on Wednesday (06), Deputy Chairman of the market’s traders association H. T. N. Samaratunga told The Island on Thursday (07).
The traders of the Manning Market had thrown away eight to ten tonnes of vegetables from Monday to Wednesday, he added.
“We are throwing away large quantities of vegetables. This is a tragedy. The price of vegetables have dropped significantly, but there are fewer buyers. This is mainly due to the increase in the price of fuel,” Samaratunga opined.
He said that the situation in peripheral markets was even worse. One has to pay close to 50,000 rupees to transport a lorry load of vegetables from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo, Samaratunga said.
