Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman this week announced that the Government has earmarked Rs. 14 billion to ensure land rights for persons without land in the country’s estates sector.

Thondaman made these comments while speaking to the media following an event held at the University of Peradeniya.

The Minister said President Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced the initiation of measures to provide both land and housing for the estate communities. Accordingly, he confirmed that Rs. 4 billion has been allocated for land ownership while another Rs. 10 billion has been assigned for the construction of 10,000 estate houses across 89 Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Thondaman also expressed his vision to revive the upland tourism business associated with tea plantations. Additionally, he outlined plans for the establishment of a new university in the country’s central highlands.
