Two names have been forwarded to President Ranil Wickremesinghe to fill the existing vacancy in the Court of Appeal (CA).

The vacancy has been created following the recent retirement of Justice Dr. Ruwan Fernando.

To fill the vacancy created by Dr. Fernando’s retirement, Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya has recommended Justice Chamath Morais, who is the most senior Judge on the High Court Judges list. Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, meanwhile, has forwarded the name of Senior Deputy Solicitor General Mahen Gopallawa. Several members of the unofficial bar too have reportedly expressed interest in the post.

As per the Constitution, the President will recommend a name he considers suitable for the post to the Constitutional Council for approval.
